Wig Wam Village - Cave City
The Wigwam Village Inn was a dream of Frank A. Redford in the early 1900s.
Frank’s inspiration for this dream was a popular cone-shaped ice cream parlor and authentic tipis he’d seen on a Sioux Reservation in South Dakota.
His vision came true in 1935 when the construction of Wigwam Village No. 1 in Horse Cave, Kentucky was completed.
When Frank realized that he came up with a popular idea, he had the design patented by the US Patent Office in 1936.
Wigwam Village Inn # 2 was completed in Cave City in 1937.
Five more were built over time in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, California and Arizona.
From the beginning, the Wigwam villages were built as places with a special atmosphere.
The common area in the middle of the circle of wigwams seemed to invite people to talk and sit together.
From the seven original Wigwam villages, only three remain:
- # 2 in Cave City, Kentucky,
- # 6 in Holbrook, Arizona
- # 7 in Rialto, California.
Wigwam Village # 2 is a real memorial to the American dream of a man, who has come true.
The main building, which consists of 38 tons of concrete and 13 tons of steel, is 15 meters high. It was originally a restaurant, but with the completion of Interstate 65 in the mid-1960s, the restaurant was closed and there is now a gift shop in this main building.
Each of the remaining 15 buildings houses a bedroom plus a bathroom.
Ten of these buildings have a double bed and the other five have two double beds. The furnishings in each of the buildings date from the 1930s.
