Dauphin Island is located south of Mobile. It is a barrier island of the at the Gulf of Mexico. The island was originally named “Massacre Island” was renamed in Dauphin Island. The name of the island is often mistaken as “Dolphin Island”; dauphin means Prince or Oldest Son of the King in French.
