Dalton Gang Hideout
The Dalton Gang Hideout, was formerly the home of Eva Dalton Whipple, sister of the infamous Dalton Gang.
Eva Dalton came to Meade in the mid 1880’s, and was married to J.N. Whipple, merchant, who lived in Meade in 1887.
Whipple built the house which still stands at the corner of Pearlette and Green Streets for his wife.
Several years after the Whippels left town a deep tunnel from the house to the barn built was discovered. Most probably the tunnel was used by the gang to come and go undetected by the law.
In 1940 the town of Meade Chamber purchased the old Whipple house and the Dalton Gang Hideout became one of the first tourist attractions in Southwest Kansas.
