Monument to Joe Louis - Detroit
The Monument to Joe Louis is a 24-foot-long arm with a fisted hand suspended by a 24-foot-high pyramidal framework.
It was created by the Mexican-American sculptor Robert Graham, and poured by the legendary bronze artist, Rolf Kriken.
The giant sculpture at Detroits Riverfront represents the power of Joe Louis punch both inside and outside the ring. Louis was a fighter outside the ring towered Jim Crow laws for racial injustice.
The sculpture was vandalized by two white men in 2004. The painted it white and left a sign which read, “Courtesy of Fighting Whities”.
