Slab City

Slab City was once a camper community for snowbirds in the California Desert. Mostly retired elderly come from the higher regions in the north to spend the winter in the warmer regions.

Some of them have giant motorhomes others put their smaller Rv’s on the grounds of the abandoned World War II Marine Corps barracks of Camp Dunlap.

The Camp is situated about 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles in Imperial County, near the little town of Niland.

In the years some of the campers made “The Slabs” their home, they sold their homes in the north.
The group of permanent residents grows from year to year, the deserted location is a good

Slab City (The Slabs)

Slab City has no official electricity, running water, sewers, toilets or trash pickup service. The community organizes all this thing their selves. They have solar panels or water tanks. Trash is used to build art.

Everybody can come or live in Slab City, there is no rent or Parking Fee to pay.

So, Slab City is a although a very good place for poor families they can’t afford a living in the city’s anymore.

The closest town is Niland, where the residents often go to do shopping for groceries.

Slab City is often labeled as a community of Hippies an Anarchists.

The community is growing, meanwhile there is a church, some motels and even a small Eco Village.

Directions: From I-10 take exit 144 (Indio) Take 111 to Niland, CA. In Niland make a right turn on Main follw the road (Beale Str.) over the tracks, follow the street for 3 miles. On the right hand side you'll see the Salvation Mountain, go further for 1 mile.
