Bagdad Café on Route 66

The famous Bagdad Café is located near Newberry Springs, a location on the edge of the Mojave Desert.
From the outside, it still looks like Percy Adlon must have found it 25 years ago; a wind-skewed wooden house, dark red, with an overhanging, asymmetrical shingled roof.

The interior, however, has changed since the filmset: The long counter is mint green, light-alloy chairs with seats made of manmade leather.

Some light blue others purple. On the walls advertising posters from the 50s, the decade when the world was still okay for America.

The joining room is dedicated to the film (Bagdad Café, Out of Rosenheim), with photos of the set, the actors (Marianne Sägebrecht, Monica Calhoun, Christine Kaufmann) and the director (Percy Adlon).
Worth a longer stop.

The historic Route 66 – The hissing wind whirls up dust. In the summer, the temperaturs climb up to 120 degrees and more, on winter nights it sinks to freezing degrees.

We visited in April and September, it was very hot both times.
