Mission San Francisco De La Espada - San Antonio

In 1660 Mission San Francisco de la Espada was established as Roman Rite Catholic mission. 1731 is was relocated to San Antonio

The mission was built in order to convert local Native Americans to Christianity and also solidify Spanish territorial claims in the New World against encroachment from France.

Mission Espada and the four other missions in the San Antonio were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site on July 5, 2015.

it was named a National Historic Landmark on April 15, 1970 and is part of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.
