Big John - Metropolis
The Big John statues were built for the Big John grocery store chain which was based in Carmi, IL in the 1960’s.
Back then there were about 30 Big John stores in Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky and Tennessee.
The giants were produced around 1967 by the General Sign Co. in Cape Girardeau in Missouri. The designer was Jimmy Boyd.
Each Big John statue is about 30 feet tall, originally they wore checkered shirts, blue jeans.
They carry giant bags of groceries.
The Big John in Metropolis stands in front of the still-operating Big John grocery store.
He is holding just 2 bags instead of four
